Foster Grandparent Program In Action
Story and photography by Kayla White, CFO
The Foster Grandparent Program is a program that we, at Boys' Haven have been working with for many years. It is a program that allows Grandparents to volunteer at an organization of their choice, allowing them the opportunity to give back to their community, even after retirement. Grandpa Oscar Cole has been with the Foster Grandparent Program for 20 years, and during those 20 years, he has given his heart and soul to the residents, staff, and board of directors at Boys' Haven of America, Inc. Through the years, his dedication to our program has truly changed the lives of many young men. Most of our residents come from unstable home lives, and Grandpa Cole has been a solid fixture on our front porch for years and years, providing our boys with a sense of stability that many have never experienced. Even before joining the Foster Grandparent Program, Grandpa Cole was dedicated to helping young men in need, as he has been contributing to Boys’ Haven for over 50 years. During his time at Boys' Haven, Grandpa Cole has influenced our young men academically and spiritually, he has often given up his free time to attend special events and holiday celebrations where our boys are being honored or celebrated. With that, thanks to BISD we have recently added a school building to our campus, where young men who for, one reason or another are unable to attend public school, are given the opportunity to complete their assignments and necessary school work in more of a one-on-one setting, increasing their chances of progressing academically. As we begin to work with residents in our new school, we have decided to dedicate this building to Grandpa Cole, as we see no better way to honor someone that has given so much to our residents over the last 50 years...he has truly been a guiding force in helping us to continue in our mission of building a brighter tomorrow for the boys of today and the residents, staff, and board of directors would like to graciously thank Grandpa Cole for his continued service and support throughout the years, and we look forward to many years to come!!
